Benue State Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU of Benue State University, BSU to reconsider and call off their strike action.
The governor made this call yesterday when members of masters in public administration, set 2001/2002 led by Mr Emmanuel Ortsegha paid him a courtesy call at the old banquet hall of Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.
ASUU are now demanding for an additional two months salaries after initially agreeing to call off the strike if May and June salaries were paid, which the governor did.
Ortom said haven being a product of the university himself, his government cannot afford to see it closed down for a long period of time. He therefore appealed to the leadership of the union to call off the prolonged industrial action since he had fulfilled his part of the bargain despite the harsh economic status by paying two months salaries with modalities in the pipeline to ensure that the arrears owed workers were cleared to pave way for prompt and sustainable monthly payment of salaries in the state.
Governor Ortom added that the institution was one of a few in the country with a reputation for high performance in academics and promised to ensure that the university maintained it’s academic excellence in order to compete favourably with other world class institutions.
Earlier in a remark, the class governor, Mr Ortsegha said they were at the Benue Peoples House to identify with one of their own and assure him of their sustained cooperation to succeed in his current assignment.
BSU lecturers have been on strike since the 9th of March 2105
