Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has announced that the amnesty committee set up by his administration was working out detailed modalities to rehabilitate and reintegrate those who surrender illegal weapons.
He made the announcement at Benue People's House Makurdi when he received additional weapons some of which were brought by illegal possessors in Ushongo Local government Area led by Ter Ushongo Chief Ambrose Iyortyer.
According to him the modalities included a retreat at which terms of rehabilitation and reintegration of the affected persons would be unveiled.
He emphasized that he was determined to tackle security issues first so as to provide an enabling environment for investment into the state in order to create massive jobs, wealth and opportunities.
The Governor who called on those still keeping illegal arms to surrender them or face sanctions at the end of the amnesty program at the end of September this year commended the Ter Ushongo, other royal fathers and the clergy who accompanied him for providing the platform for the possessors to surrender.He urged all residents in the state to expose criminals in their midst so that crime will be reduced to the barest minimum and changed criminals to engage in legal means of livelihood.
In his remarks, the Ter Ushongo, Chief Iyortyer stated that he came to present a group of young people from his domain in possession of illegal arms who pleaded that they should be forgiven and allowed to be reintegrated into the society.
Responding on behalf of those who surrendered the arms, Mr. Liambee Adeede, promised never to indulge in crime again and commended Governor Ortom for accepting them into his fold and the Ter Ushongo for handing them over to the Governor.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Retired Colonel Edwin Jando stated that assorted automatic and locally made rifles, pistols, grenades, and rounds of live ammunition were also surrendered.
