The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Post Election Review Committee is set to submit its report in September this year, THISDAY can authoritatively reveal.
According to an impeccable source, a letter signed by the Chairman of the panel, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and addressed to the Acting Chairman of the PDP, National Working Committee, Prince Uche Secondus showed that the Committee had concluded its work and is set to submit its report.
According to the source at the Wadata Plaza, the National Headquarters of the PDP in Abuja, the Senator Ekweremadu-led Panel in the letter dated August 17, 2015.
It could be recalled that the Committee was set up in May this year following the party’s first-ever defeat in a general election in April.
It had a nine-point terms of reference, namely: “To identify the remote and immediate causes of the poor performance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections; trace the origin and process of the seeming decline of the party in its electoral performance; and to take a critical look at the preparations and build-up of the PDP to the 2015 General Elections and determine its adequacies and lapses”.
Others were “to review and determine the adequacy of the structures for the 2015 general elections and how those structures actually functioned; ascertain the degree of anti-party activities, compromises and outright sabotage that may have contributed to the misfortunes of the party at the elections; look at funding of the elections to determine whether or not the funds meant for the campaigns were adequate and whether disbursements were properly done; and identify different groups in the Party who were to play critical roles before and during the elections and determine their effectiveness or otherwise”.
The Committee was also mandated to “examine any other matter that may be considered necessary and in the interest of the party and propose a roadmap for the party to recover its past glory”.
However, the Committee could not submit its report within the three-week period, which had since expired in June, making it imperative for the panel to request for additional time.
The source said the additional time was to enable the Committee to do a thorough job as the future of the PDP would depend very much on the panel’s work.
“The Committee held several consultations with critical stakeholders upon inauguration, including former President Goodluck Jonathan before he handed over and also held extensive consultations in the six geopolitical zones where party faithful poured out their hearts”, said the source.
The source, which could not confirm if cash crunch that has allegedly hit the party was responsible for the little delay, however confirmed that Committee members made sacrifices as the Chairman of the Panel, Ekweremadu insisted the Committee would not collect a dime from any stakeholder so as not to compromise its work.
