INTRODUCTION
The ability of any Government to efficiently and effectively finance it's expenditure depends on resources available to her. It is against this background that the Benue State Government is maximizing the internally generated revenue (IGR) potential of the state through mobilisation of revenue and repositioning the revenue collection machinery to usher in the required financial strength to enhance the capacity of the state government to provide the dividends of democracy to her people.
WHAT IS REVENUE?
simply defined, revenue is funds required by the government to finance it's activities. These funds are generated from TAX REVENUE AND NON TAX REVENUE.
THE ROLE OF REVENUE TO GOVERNMENT.
Revenue Is the live wire that government works, without which the operations of government anywhere in the world will be hampered. Government uses the revenue generated to provide the following :
* defense against external aggression
* provision of social welfare services
* control of the economy
* redistribution of income
* stimulating domestic and foreign investment
TAXES/LEVIES COLLECTIBLE BY BENUE STATE GOVERNMENT
1.personal income Tax
- Pay-as-you-earn
- Direct (self and government) assessment
2. Withholding Tax (individuals only)
3. Capital gains Tax
4. Stamp Duties( instruments executed by individuals)
5. Pools Betting, lotteries, Gaming and Casino Taxes
6. Road Taxes
7. Business premises Registration and renewal levy
- urban Areas
- rural areas
8. Develop levy
9. Naming of street registration fee in state capitals
10. Right of occupancy fee
11.rates in markets where state finance are involved
12. Land use charge
13.hotels, restaurants and event centre consumption Tax
14. Entertainment Tax
15. Environment ( ecological) fee or levy.
16. Mining, milling and quarrying fee
17. Animal Trade Tax
18. Produce sales Tax.
19. Slaughter or abattoir fees
20. Infrastructural maintenance charge or levy.
21. Fire service charge
22. Property Tax
23. Economic development levy
24. Social service contribution levy.
25. Signage and mobile advertisement, jointly collected by State and Local government.

1. shops and kiosks rates
2. Tenement rates
3. On and off liquor licence
4. Slaughter slab fees
5. Marriage, birth and death registration fees.
6. Naming of Street registration fee (excluding state capitals)
7. Right of occupancy fee (excluding state capitals)
8. Market fees (excluding market where state finance are involved)
9. Motor Park levies
10. Domestic animal licence
11. Bicycle, truck, canoe, wheelbarrow and Cart fees
12. Cattle Tax
13. Merriment and road closure fees
14. Radio/television (other than radio /TV transmitter) licence and
15. Vehicle radio licence (to be imposed by the local government in which the car is registered
16. Wrong parking charges
17. Public convenience, sewage and refuse disposal fees
18. Customary, burial ground and religious places permit and
19. Religious places establishment permit fees
20. Signboard / advertisement permit
CONCLUSION
The revenue sources in themselves do not translate into internally generated revenue for the state.
Therefore, concerted efforts by all stakeholders will ensure effective and optimum collection of all revenues.
