"FOR ONCE, BIRS HAS COME TO LIMELIGHT": TOR-TIV APPRAISES THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN, MRS. MIMI ADZAPE-ORUBIBI

5/11/2015: TOR TIV PALACE, GBOKO

The Tor-Tiv, Orchivirigh, Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkula, has scored Mrs. Orubibi very high in her performance so far. The Paramount Chief of the Tiv nation who spoke in his see of authority, gave the commendation when the Executive Chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) and her management staff paid him a courtesy call.

Dr. Torkula who was overwhelmed by the coherent and logical manner the Chief Executive of the board briefed him on the happenings at the board; gave her his blessings, with the charge to carry on with the good work she has started. He lamented the doomsday ahead, where Scientists have predicted that Nigeria will soon be barren of crude oil, and the entire country will be left helpless, with nowhere to turn to. He therefore, called on the people to support the goodwill of Mrs. Orubibi by paying their taxes promptly.

Commenting on the area of partnership between the Traditional Institution and BIRS in the area of revenue collection, the Orchivirigh, Alfred Akawe Torkula (PhD) condemned the exclusion of the traditional rulers from tax collection, calling on the Executive Chairman and her management staff to fashion out ways via which, his local chiefs would be helpful to the board in the same respect. He automatically gave an invite to Mrs. Orubibi to come and enlighten his council of chiefs on the types of taxes to be collected and the modus operandi of the POS Machines, which will be launched officially in January, next year.

Speaking earlier, the Executive Chairman, Mrs. Mimi Adzape-Orubibi whom His Royal Highness immediately nicknamed; "soja woman", told the Tor-Tiv that they were in his palace, to give honour to whom it is due, receive royal blessings and support from him to go ahead with her legitimate duties. She carefully explained to him, the challenges she met on ground, what she is doing currently and the prospects ahead. She expressed confidence in his ability to help her attain the target set for her by the government, using his traditional instrument of authority and fatherhood of the entire Tiv nation.

Mrs. Orubibi stated further,  that things have really fallen apart and the centre cannot hold, as the allocation gotten from the federal government is nothing to write home about; considering the state's wage bill and other financial obligations that must be met by the government. Hence, the imperative of prompt tax payment to cushion the effects. She explained that taxes can be paid little by little (N50 per day, instead of N15,000 per annum, for those in that category and so on).

The Chairman, Chief Executive, also thanked Governor-samuel Ortom for not interfering with her work so far and promised to do her best in helping him achieve his campaign promises to the good people of Benue State. This she said will be demonstrated by her resolve to block lekeages and harmonise all revenue accounts.

Ultimately, His Royal Highness spoke "ex cathedra", calling on all his sons and daughters to pay their taxes joyously and competitively. This he did in English and the language of the gods (Tiv).

On her way back, Mrs. Orubibi visited Adekaa Area Tax office, Gboko, where she inspected the movement register and questioned the rationale behind the attitude of frequently visiting the corporate headquarters, as noticed in the movement record of a particular staff.
